The owners of the Slot Ocean Bar in Miami have decided to open a casino slot machine in the lobby of the bar. This is a very interesting decision as it opens up a door for other gambling opportunities in the area. You may have noticed that the Florida real estate market has taken a downturn and has dropped to all time lows, which means that there is an increased possibility for business owners to increase their business with gambling options. This opens up the door for online casinos and online slot machines. What is interesting about this new slot machine business opportunity is that the owners of the Slot Ocean are also responsible for all advertising, which will include an online website. When you play at a slot machine you are playing for credits or payouts. These credits can either be made to enter into a real slot game or just for playing the slots themselves. There are some games that you can only play for credits, but these games are the ones where you do not get any cash from winning. This is the opposite of payouts. When you win a slot machine game you get cash from it and you pay out your winnings. The slot machine business is not only restricted to casinos but is also used by restaurants and other venues. If you go to an airport or hotel in Miami and you see that the slot machine games have been installed, you may assume that it is a resort giving out prizes to its patrons. This is because slot machines are considered to be gambling and therefore the laws that pertain to gambling have been placed on the airways, so that if you are playing on the air you are breaking one of the laws and can be arrested for it. If you decide to gamble with slot machines, then you need to realize that you could lose a lot of money. Even if you win a slot machine, you could lose more money if you do not know what you are doing. Many people are unaware of the fact that when you play slot machines you are dealing with chance and not skill. When you place your bet and pull the handle, the ball falls into the slot and then it is up to you to pull the handle again and the ball will fall in the slot once again. This is how slot machines work. It is important to know that this means that you should never make a bet while you are at a slot machine because chances are that you will just lose more money. If you are playing with slot machines in an internet casino, then you need to do a little extra work and study the slots before placing your bets. As said earlier, slot machines are dealt by the same people over again, so slot machines tend to get a bad reputation. The truth is that you need to play slot machines in order to win money. This means that you need to make sure that you have learned everything there is to know about the slot machine and you do not trust everyone who comes along to play with the slot machine. There are some things you can do to increase your odds of winning. For example, if you know that there is a high possibility that a particular slot machine will payout a lot of money, then you should play it whenever possible. These tips are only a few of the many tips you will find in a slot machine guide.

Trip Report: The 10 Best Sightseeing Activities in Singapore
Singapore has a lot to offer visitors, from modern skyscrapers to charming colonial neighborhoods, those who have the chance to explore Singapore will have no trouble filling their time, and their stomachs, with the rich cultures that can be found here. Singapore is small enough that you can travel from one end of the country to the other in around two hours by the state-of-the-art subway system (MRT), the official language is English, and you can drink the water straight out of the tap. In addition, Singapore enjoys one of the lowest crime-rates on Earth, so you can relax knowing you can explore the city safely. It is sometimes referred to as “Asia Light” because you can get a taste of Asian culture, while enjoying easy travel and all the comforts and conveniences of one of the wealthiest cities on the continent. I have spent a good amount of time here exploring the tiny city-state and playing tour guide for visiting friends and family members. Here is my list of the best attractions for short-term visitors to check out while exploring this fascinating city.
Marina Bay
A scenic walk around Singapore’s Marina Bay is the perfect way to take in some of the best views of the city’s awe-inspiring skyline. Marina Bay is surrounded with some of Singapore’s most famous landmarks. To the south, there is the iconic Marina Bay Sands Hotel with its three skyward towers crowned by a world-famous infinity pool, the ArtScience Museum, with its high-tech salad bowl architecture, and Gardens by the Bay. To the north, the imposing skyline of Singapore’s Central Business District provides a backdrop for the Fullerton Hotel with its Merlion statue, the official mascot of Singapore, with the head of a lion and the body of a fish, and Theatres on the Bay performing arts center. The Theatres on the Bay building was intended to look like a microphone, but locals endearingly refer to it as “The Durian” because it also closely resembles the stinky fruit commonly eaten in Malaysia and Singapore. Marina Bay is located at the southern end of the downtown core, where the Singapore River meets the South China Sea. You can reach the bay via the Bayfront MRT station which will drop you off underneath the upscale shopping mall that adjoins the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. Be sure to stay for Spectra, a laser light, music and water show at Marina Bay that happens Sunday-Thursday 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm, and Friday and Saturday 8:00 pm, 9:00 pm, and 10:00 pm.
Gardens by the Bay
Singapore Gardens by the Bay was originally conceived in 2005 as part of an effort to transform Singapore into a “City in a Garden”. Consisting of 250 acres of manicured gardens, and admission is free. The main attractions are two large glass conservatories, the Flower Dome, and the Cloud forest, and the Supertree Grove. The Flower Dome is the largest glass greenhouse in the world without internal supporting columns, and is filled with hundreds of species of carefully manicured flower and plant gardens. The Cloud Forrest is a towering structure designed to simulate high-elevation tropical habitat, and features a huge indoor waterfall. Visitors can take an elevator to the top and walk down through the various levels of the structure which contain exhibits along the way. The Cloud Forrest features an excellent exhibit on the effects of global warming in the region and the world. The Supertree Grove consists of towering structures designed to act as artificial trees. Each tree is covered in species of ferns orchids and other plants representing different regions. Be sure to catch Garden Rhapsody, nightly at 7:45 and 8:45, a light show synchronized to music at the Supertree Grove. The electricity to power the lights and music is sustainably generated at the Gardens by the Bay. Gardens by the Bay is carefully engineered for conservation. The conservatory domes collect rain water for the park, while electricity is generated by photovoltaic cells to generate electricity, and biomass in the form of plant trimmings from the garden are burned to generate steam and power turbine generators. Admission to Gardens by the Bay is totally Free, but there is a fee to enter the conservatory domes. You can visit the website for the latest events and details http://www.gardensbythebay.com.sg/en.html
Hawker Centers
It has been said that you can tell a lot about a culture by its food. While Singapore has a huge array of fine dining options for visitors, the hawker centers are what feed the locals. Singaporean food has influences stemming from China, Malaysia, India, and the rest of Southeast Asia, and should be on any visitor’s list of things to check out. Hawker centers are basically food courts which first sprang up in Singapore in the 1950’s in an attempt to manage the street vendors who were setting up shop all over Singapore. An overabundance of street food was causing congestion, and made it nearly impossible to oversee sanitation. The solution was to move vendors into permanent stalls in large food centers, where health officials could ensure sanitary conditions. In my opinion the best food in Singapore can be found in the hawker centers, and for reasonable prices too. If you are planning to sample of Singapore’s culinary delights, you might consider skipping the indoor restaurants, and head straight to the local hawkers.
East Coast Park Lagoon Food Center
This is my personal favorite choice to experience Singaporean food. Located on East Coast Park, this hawker has some of the best food in Singapore, with an amazing view of the ocean. Get there early to ensure that you can get a good table, buy a bucket of beer, and sample the rich food culture of Singapore on the beach. This is a great place to try seafood, including the infamous chili crab, one of the unofficial national dishes of Singapore. Chili crab is a whole crab cooked in a rich spicy curry. Soft fried buns are usually eaten alongside chili crab so soak up the delicious sauce. The chicken, mutton, and beef satay are also a must-try. After your dinner you can work off some of your meal by walking along the ocean, watching the large ships mooring offshore while they wait to access the Singapore Harbor. The best way to get to East Coast Park Lagoon is by taxi, as MRT does not go there. Be sure to tell the driver that you want to go to “East Coast Park Hawker”, not “East Coast Park Seafood."
Maxwell Food Centre
Located nearby Singapore’s vibrant Chinatown, the Maxwell Food Center offers visitors the chance to try a selection of Singapore’s most famous dishes, at a convenient downtown location. Probably Maxwell’s most famous stall is Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice. Made famous by an endorsement from celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, long lines are usually present to sample the poached or roasted chicken and fragrant garlic rice. Personally I would skip the line, as the other chicken rice vendors at Maxwell are also excellent, but you certainly can’t go wrong with Tian Tian. Keep an out for roti prata at Maxwell. Roti prata is a Malaysian Muslim dish which is similar to a crepe, filled with egg, onion, and/or cheese, and served with a rich curry for dipping. Roti prata is my favorite breakfast in Singapore.
Lau Pa Sat Festival Market
Lau Pa Sat is located in the center of Singapore’s financial district. Located in the historic Telok Ayer Market building, which was originally built on what was at the time Singapore’s waterfront in 1824, Lau Pa Sat is a great place to get your grub on. The best time to go is after 7:00 pm, when they close one of the adjacent streets for “Satay Street”, where vendors compete to see who grills the best satay, or delicious skewers of marinated meat that are served with a peanut dipping sauce.
Cable Car to Sentosa
The small Island of Sentosa was built just off the southern coast of Singapore as a resort and entertainment destination. Sentosa is covered in theme parks, water parks, golf courses, and beach-front bars. Universal Studios is one of Sentosa’s main attractions, but visitors can race down a zip-line, take a bungee jump, navigate a street luge course, see one of the world’s largest aquariums, or try their luck at the casino. You can get to Sentosa by taxi, on foot, or by monorail. My favorite way to reach the island is by the incredibly scenic Cable Car. The Cable Car consists of small gondolas on a sky-high cable that runs from Mt. Faber on the mainland, through the Harbourfront Center building, all the way across a long waterway to Sentosa. The Cable Car provides some of the best views of Singapore, and is definitely the way to get to Sentosa in style. You can ride the cable car to Sentosa by taking a taxi to Mt. Faber, or hopping on MRT to the Harbourfront Station (Vivo City). Round trip tickets are USD $20, but even budget travelers might find the experience worth a splurge.
Chinatown
Singapore is more than 75% ethnic Chinese, so it should come as no surprise that it is home to a lively and thriving Chinatown. Visiting Chinatown offers visitors to Singapore an opportunity to experience the sights, smells, and flavors of China right in the heart of Singapore. Chinatown is made up of several blocks of colorful colonial style shop-houses just outside of the Central Business District. The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple is one of the main attractions in Singapore’s Chinatown. The temple offers visitors the chance to visit an active working Buddhist temple. The structure itself is not old, built in 2007 in the style of Chinese Tang architecture at a cost of $75 million dollars. The temple gets its name because it houses a tooth that is said to have belonged to the Buddha. The tooth was discovered in a collapsed golden stupa in Myanmar in 1998, and the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple was built to offer a suitable place to house the holy relic. The temple is four stories high, with a large prayer wheel and serene garden on the roof. Admission is free of charge, including the excellent museum showcasing the history of Buddhism. The temple is located on South Bridge Road and Sago Lane, which was once referred to as the street of the dead as it was once lined with “death houses”. In Chinese superstition, it is unlucky if anyone dies in the family home, so early Chinese immigrants to Singapore sent their elderly to places like Sago Lane to await their end. Chinatown food street is located on Smith Street, right in the heart of Chinatown. Closed to car traffic, the street is lined with hawker stalls and outdoor seating, offering a great place to try some of Singapore’s local favorites. The stalls tend to be a little more expensive on food street, than in Singapore’s plentiful hawker centers, but the lively atmosphere makes up for it. Smith Street is also home to Liao Fan Hawker Chan Restaurant (78 Smith Street). Hawker Chan has received the coveted Michelin Star award for its chicken rice in 2016, and is widely acclaimed as the cheapest place to try a Michelin Star meal in the world at well under five bucks a plate. Singapore’s Chinatown is also one of the best places to pick up inexpensive souvenirs for your friends and family back home. Many of the streets of Chinatown are lined with shops featuring the best of Singapore’s touristy nick-knacks, and at some of the lowest prices on the island due to the amount of competition.
Little India
The bright colors and bustling streets of Little India, offer visitors a taste of the Indian sub-continent right in central Singapore. Little India holds a large share of Singapore’s hostels and budget accommodation options, so if you are traveling on the cheap, odds are you will get to know Little India pretty well. The main things to do in Little India, are shop and eat. Little India Arcade is a small collection of shop-houses that were built in 1913. The narrow streets are closed off to traffic, and are lined with shops selling curiosities from India. This is a great place to do some souvenir shopping while exploring the fascinating wares that the vendors are offering. The Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple is a colorful Hindu Temple in the heart of Little India, the temple was built in 1881 and is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali. Inside, a statue of Kali can be seen adorned with a garland of human skulls. Mustafa Centre is Singapore’s answer to a Walmart. This huge shopping complex is open 24 hours, and consists of sprawling labyrinth-like corridors spanning several floors of multiple buildings. If Mustafa Centre doesn’t have it somewhere, it probably doesn’t exist. For great cheap food, stop by Sakunthalas Restaurant at 151 Dunlop Street. They serve up a variety of Indian dishes at bargain prices. Be sure to order a “teh tarik” or pulled tea to go with your meal.
Singapore Zoo
A visit to the Singapore is a great way to spend an afternoon or an evening while visiting Singapore. I am a little bit hesitant to recommend zoos to travelers, as they sometimes get a bad rap for their treatment of the animals. The Singapore Zoo is truly an exceptional zoo, and I am pleased to report that enclosures and care for the animals are first-rate. Most of the animals have plenty of space to roam. Some, like the monkeys don’t even really have cages, and can wander around in the primate area as they please. I have actually seen wild local monkeys interacting with the monkeys at the zoo on more than one occasion. The elephants have acres of land that they can walk, and all of the enclosures are clean and well cared for. Visiting the Singapore Zoo will offer you a chance to see wildlife from around the globe and you can learn about the threats to endangered animals in Southeast Asia. For a particular treat, you can even arrange to have breakfast with the orangutans. Have you ever gone to a zoo, and half of the animals are just lying there asleep? That’s because many of the animals are nocturnal, and are mainly active at night. The Singapore Zoo Night Safari is the perfect way to see how all of the animals that are normally sleeping during the day behave once the sun goes down. On the night safari, guests are driven around the zoo on a tram, offering a glimpse into the alter ego of the wild kingdom. The Singapore Zoo River Safari showcases the fish and animals that live in the world’s largest river systems. The River Safari is unique, as most aquariums highlight saltwater and ocean fish. It is really amazing to see just how diverse life in freshwater systems can be. The river safari also offers two optional boat tours at an additional cost. The Night Safari, and River Safari, are available as an add-on to zoo admission, or as a separate ticket. Personally I prefer the River Safari to the zoo, as it is not that often that you have a chance to explore the Earth’s freshwater habitats in an aquarium.
Nature Reserves
Most visitors to Singapore would never guess that the ultra-modern city was once nothing more than mangrove swamps and thick jungles. While most of the tiny island has been paved, and is now home to towering skyscrapers, there are still a few wilderness areas where you can get a taste of the dense forests that once dominated the landscape in Singapore.
MacRitchie Reservoir
The MacRitchie Reservoir is Singapore’s oldest reservoir, built in 1838. There is still more than 1 square kilometer of virgin jungle next to the reservoir, that hikers can explore via wooden boardwalks and trails. Water monitor lizards and monkeys are commonly seen along the trail, and the latter can even be a nuisance if you do not keep your food hidden from sight. Trails range in length from 3-11 km. It can be unbearably hot and humid in the jungle in Singapore, so be sure to bring plenty of water, and visit in the morning to avoid the afternoon heat. MacRitchie Reservoir can be easily accessed by the Marymount MRT station. Where else, can you take the subway to get to the jungle to hike with wild monkeys and giant lizards?
Sungei Buloh Wetlands
Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve is located to the extreme north of Singapore, next to the causeway that separates Singapore from West Malaysia. The park is home to swampy mangrove forests and estuaries that attract all sorts of wildlife. On a typical walk at Sungei Buloh, you can expect to see water monitor lizards, monkeys, countless bird species, mudskippers, dragonflies, and even saltwater crocodiles. The trails are impeccably maintained, and flat. There are birdwatching blinds, and benches along the trail, making this more of a casual nature walk than a hike, but Sungei Buloh is still one of the best places to spot what is left of the wild animal species that once dominated the island of Singapore.
Haw Par Villa
Haw Par Villa is without a doubt one of the strangest attractions in Singapore. Originally built in 1934 by the Haw brothers, who were the creators of Tiger Balm ointment, the sprawling complex was originally the grounds for one of the family’s lavish mansions, and an amusement park. The amusement park/grounds were intended to teach school children about Chinese culture by depicting scenes from Chinese folklore in the hundreds of statues that cover the grounds. Despite seemingly constant maintenance, the statues seem to be in a constant state of disrepair, giving the park the vibe of a long-abandoned, dilapidated amusement park, straight out of a horror movie. The main attraction at Haw Par Villa, is “The Ten Courts of Chinese Hell”, an indoor depiction describing the ten hells, and the sins that will land you in each one. Admission is totally free, and you can reach the park from the Haw Par Villa MRT Station.
Tiger Brewery
The largest brewery in Singapore, Tiger Brewery offers regular tours of their extensive operation located on the west side of Singapore. Tiger brews beer for several different brands, including ABC and Guinness. The tour costs about USD $15, and includes a generous sampling of Tiger’s brews in the tasting room. Getting to the brewery is a bit of a trek, as MRT does not go directly to Tiger. The best way is by taxi, or tour can hop on one of Singapore’s excellent public busses to save some cash. Tickets should be purchased in advance. You can reserve a spot on a tour here https://tigerbrewerytour.com.sg/ The original posting of this trip report (with pictures) can be found here https://www.mymola.com/the-10-best-sightseeing-activities-in-singapore/
The official news source of Rustifac Issue #5 03/08/19 Era 3
Groups and Factions
New Paradise: Described by its leading chairmen to our paper, as the biggest and most chic entertainment resort Rustifac has ever seen, New Paradise has begun its building procedures. Spearheaded by Hotel California, whose head representative is Mr. Ace, who has openly and optimistically answered our every question, promising that the full blown experience should be up and fully running in the coming days. To all that wish to visit and enjoy the frenzied complex named the Strip, you must show proof that you are an economically successful individual at the entry gates, paying an entry fee of 500 scrap up front. Inside you shall be meet with 3 casinos, the leading Hotel California, the Sodom and Motel 9. There is also a luxurious marketplace and utility center within the Strip. While this fee might sound like a show killer for most, fear not as the generous Chairmen have said that they will be aiming to give everybody in the community a chance to enter their top deck lifestyle, by controlling a segment of the outskirts of town and provide free amenities for the general population. The outskirts of the Strip, named the Ghetto by the locals, is a no man's land, where plenty of aggressive gangs and packs of squatters have already settled down in. Here living is monitored but not restricted, says as long as you don't pose a threat to the families running the casinos on the Strip. City Of Polaris: Their soft footsteps, and even softer voices can soothe even the most seasoned badlands adventurer. The people of Polaris have proclaimed their goodwill to the island, and have promised to build a city whose heart will be to fully and unconditionally accept all lost travelers and humble people that come to their lands looking for comfort and security within their districts. The story told by the city's leader Gat36, has left us with quite an ethereal feel. Once lost travelers themselves, roaming the seas looking for a place they longed for but knew nothing about, the group stumbled upon another dark night, where they faithfully followed the stars and their mysterious ways. When they sailed almost under the shiniest star of all, they saw the island of Rustifac, and connecting immediately with this sign, they knew this was the home they so desperately had been looking for. They now aim that the City of Polaris can be the same for you. The Kingdom: As we walked through its temporary wooden gates, we knew we were in for quite the warm welcome. Receiving our party with pure cheer and joy was Eassimak, the leader of this settlement we had found ourselves in. The Kingdom, described by it's leaders and equally cheerful citizens, as a nation about being part of something bigger than oneself, all while rewarding arduous work with great progress to lead the island in a brighter, tighter and happier future. Planned is the construction of a city, protected by capable army, developed economically by a airport, and known for its leisure activities such as special events and games, featuring great prizes for the winners. Chemists: This group of studious and ingenuous scientists, known for their controversial scientific research and methods amidst the islands community, have begun building their main research facility, as they slowly but surely develop a proper basis of infrastructure, to house their diverse and extensive departments, covering almost every field of science known to man. The bright people of the Chemists spear headed by Head Researches, Dr. Edwin Wright and Dr. Bunsen Burns, have promised the island great scientifically advancements this era, a process that will improve general life quality for all inhabitants of Rustifac. Arathi Empire: The newly formed empire consisting of a series of highlands tribes from the far away island of Happis have congregated and come to Rustifac, after being driven away from their home island by a ruthless group of barbarians, leaving these poor but willing people with little on their person. Now driven by the determination of rising strong and mighty once more, the Arathi aim to restore the glory of their former empire, as they describe themselves as benevolent but firm people who will not hesitate to fight back against any and all aggression towards them and their allies. PitTown: This town composed of strong minded individuals has promised the island to deliver some of the best arena fighting we have seen in years. Led by Waggy, the town's development shall be centered around a large and near sacred arena that will host great fights to settle disputes, along with betting to further enrich the environment around the whole spectacle. Front de Liberation des Rustoquois: This faction, possessing quite a peculiar name, has announced and aimed to expand its numbers and influence through a mass distribution of propaganda apparatus. While the representatives of the movement say that they aim to solely spread their culture through mass information distribution, Faction leaders across the island have expressed their distaste towards the FLR's actions, as it has been rumored that they have been arming rebel movements, and have incentivized uprisings against the commanding forces of the aforementioned factions. Along with a fully structured social system, this front might become a seriously disruptive force for most of the large factions of the island, whose over all target audience is quite large. Minutemen of Bankstown: A group composed of hardened veterans of the Frontier wars, the Minutemen of Bankstown have announced their peaceful settlement here in Rustifac, where they have vowed to relinquish all their weaponry and their craft for war. Here they shall focus on peaceful trading and development, but have warned any potential wolves looking for a sweet spot within their ranks that if conflict does come knocking, they will be ready and willing to defend their lands with the very weapons they have buried deep down. Bloodtide: A nation almost lost to time itself, bloodtide has returned to the island 219 days after their original departure for reasons that are now mere folklore tales, as most people of island had not been alive to remember this once great faction. Having reached our lands with their glistering armor, they come with a promise of peaceful coexistence with the rest of islands factions. StilWater: Claiming to have come from an island eaten up by the ocean's wrath, Water now comes to Rustifac with a sense of superiority in their minds, telling all the natives here about how gracefully and swiftly they escaped the menacing storm back home. Aiming to show all of us what they had accomplished in their previous island, these proud folks have begun the construction of their main development buildings and living quarters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Politics and Conflicts
Chemists, Water and Kingdom sign the Covalent alliance treaty: After escaping certain death aboard a hijacked cobalt transport ship, the leaders of these 3 factions have decided to celebrate their dare devil feat by signing this mutual aid deal to further strengthen the bond connecting the 3. In a brief speech BigBubbaMan, one of Water's head leaders and survivor of the flood, claimed to be "absolutely delighted that this bond between three of my now closest friends can translate into something more then mere momentary need for survival. To all 3 parties, prosperity and peace shall come hand in hand with this deal! Chemists demand a cease and desist of their technologies and studies by House Industries: After having discovered that members of House Industries, a faction spawned from previous chemists members, have used a series of assets and technologies, which originally were intellectual and physical property of the Chemists, the representing law firm of the Chemists, lead by Mr. Penguin has released a statement advising the House representatives to immediately stop using any and all forms of media and technology tracing back to Chemist origins, having been given 3 days to stop its use. If the House Representatives do not comply to the demands set by Mr. Penguin, his firm has stated that they will processed with a law suit to protect the Chemists intellectual property. Two rogue citizens, Niggle and BigLadyLegz, are to be shot on sight in Polaris City: seemingly peaceful and orderly, Polaris has started facing some issues recently regarding their very lenient building policy. The story told by Polaris's Mayor, Gat36, says she had received these two individuals with open arms having given them access to the city's grand architecture plan. Finding out the two had been mischievous with their privileges, and seeing how they locked out the Polaris officials from the aforementioned room, Gat36 has issued a termination order, the rogue citizens Niggle and BigLadyLegz are to be shot on sight in Polaris territory. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I used My Run by ASICS and followed a 3-4 run per week generic plan with a long run on every other Sunday. Got up to 18.5 miles as my longest long run.
Pre-race
I live fairly locally so I hitched a ride in with another first timer and together we stretched and hung out in Bally's Casino until it was about 10 minutes to start. Then we made our way to literally the back of the starting line pack.
Race
It took us 2 minutes to get to the starting line when the gun went off. Both me and my running partner did a 5K this time last year, we loved it. We had never run before. Then in April of this year we did a half Marathon and loved that too. So as the gun was going off we both made a comment how a year ago we had literally been nervous to run a 5K and now we're doing this crazy thing. The course took us onto the northern east side of Atlantic City. Ran on the highway and into a tunnel around some of our larger casinos Bogota, Harris, Golden Nugget, and the new OCEAN resort. We hit the world famous boardwalk and ran the length of that, then said goodbye to the Half-Marathon runners as we set out into three other cities on the island (Ventor, Margate, and Longport). Then we took a back-bay tour of Margate before hopping back onto the boardwalk for the final 3 miles which finished in front of Ballys. As I write this I can't believe i'm summing up this experience and route into a few short sentences. First, the wind was howling, especially in the three smaller cities to the south. It felt like you were running against the wind in every direction down there. Miles 17-21 felt really long. Miles 21-26 felt like they were each 10 miles. The memory I hold now of crossing that finish line ranks up third after proposing to my wife and the birth of my daughter. There are few memories that will stick with you like that, and I know in my heart of heart's I'll never be able to recreate what that moment felt like again. No other race will be my first marathon and (i've sworn) never will I run a Marathon again. 5K's are fun, Half-Marathons are perfect. The actual Marathon is murder. I've gone the distance and I stand by this statement, but damn if you're reading this and haven't done one, do it. I can't explain my love-hate relationship with this race.
Post-race
I felt sick. I went home, took a nice hot bath, and have been rewarding myself with pizza and ice-cream for two days. I'm going back to a healthy diet right now. This post was generated using the new race reportr, a tool built by BBQLays for making organized, easy-to-read, and beautiful race reports.
Before going to Aruba I, like most people of my generation (late 20s), googled the crap out of Aruba. I especially googled what life outside of the resort/hotel zone is like. While there was lots of info on Aruba hardly any of it pertained to the non-resort life. Meaning, when people on forums ask "where do the locals eat", or "where can I get a reasonably priced meal", the answers given were absolutely given by people living the high life in Aruba. $30 entrees? The locals aren't eating there. And, if the place advertises itself as "where the locals eat!" (like Driftwood does), then that's not where the locals eat. That isn't to say that none of the locals eat there, as I'm sure many do. But when people from my generation ask "where do the locals eat?" they mean "where does the working class eat?". Now that I'm back from my short trip to Aruba, I feel like I have some info to share to others of my generation who aren't looking for a 5-star Aruban experience, but who are traveling on a shoestring, want to see Aruba without paying >$100 for a two hour tour in a 4x4 with six strangers, etc. First tip: Airbnb Hotels in Aruba are plentiful, and very nice. They're not even necessarily expensive. But Airbnb has penetrated Aruba and it's great. We were lucky to stay with a local who has an attached suite, rather than simply simply renting out their condo while they're away. As a result, we had locals (like, 365 days a year-type locals) feeding us info. Airbnb also kind of forces you outside of the hotel zone: we were a good 8-10 min drive away from the Highrise area, which helps when you're trying to be adventurous and explore the neighbourhoods. Our Airbnb hosts were very attentive, provided a lot of "gear", like a cool, beach chairs, maps, coupons, flippers, etc. They warned us when something went down on the island (we were there during the recent flash flood), and had ideas about how to get around. And of course, Airbnb is cheap, often come with kitchens, which allow you to head to the supermarkets and cook using local ingredients. Which brings me to the next tip. Tip two: Supermarkets Prior to arriving, whenever grocery shopping was mentioned in anything I googled it basically always referred to the large supermarkets, and especially Super Food. We went to Superfood and found the prices comparable to grocery prices in Canada (even after the conversion. Also note, we live in Victoria, BC). Items that were packaged (like cereal) were more expensive. Fruits (like limes) were ever so slightly less. And everything else (like meat and veggies) were about the same. And while Superfood was great, we found little to no reason to return; there are plentiful mini-marts and neighbourhood markets were everything was cheaper. There was nothing we needed that we couldn't find in these markets, from groceries to sunblock to booze to personal care products. I honestly don't think you need to bother with the large supermarkets, the little neighbourhood ones will do. If you're in the high rise zone, the closest one is at the Unicasa, beside the Wendy's. If you're anywhere else, there are lots. Tip three: Beaches The Palm Beach and Eagle Beach areas are indeed much fun. There's a lot going on, people to mingle with, booze everywhere, and happy hour is easy to find. If you're anything like us, we kinda didn't love that. We wanted more spacious beaches, with calmer atmospheres. In that case, allow me to suggest three spots. The first is just off the high rise beach zone. Heading towards the lighthouse, right after the casino on the left if a parking lot that was never ever full. The only people that seemed to park there were trucks with boat trailers. Park here and find a very peaceful beach with no rocks, and soft sand. It was a fabulous spot, with all the same view and sand quality of Palm Beach without any of the buzz and crap. Second, is a short walk from the lighthouse north, across the dunes, to an oddly shaped rock I doubt you could miss. When we first arrived there were some nudists there hanging out in what is clearly a secluded and rarely frequented spot. Water was clear, and the view was spectacular. Not to mention how good water feels after a 10 min walk through the desert sand dunes in a blazing sun. Third, is Daimari beach, which I'll say more about in the next tip... Tip four: Arikok Definitely worth the time. But also not something you have to rent jeeps for or take expensive atv tours. If you dedicate a day to Arikok (like, 8 am to 5pm) you can do all you need to. I'll tell you what we did on our "Arikok day", which was probably the highlight of our trip. First, recognizing that Arikok is a desert, we woke up early and drove to the main entrance to the park. We arrived exactly at 8:00am on a day that was slightly cloudy. Bought our wrist band and promptly exited the park the way we came. Leaving the park there's an immediate right that says "Daimari" onto a gravel/dirt road. We followed that until it intersected witha paved road and a sign saying that to the right is an entrance to Arikok. Down that road is the Shete entrance to Arikok. It allows you to turn a very long hike to the Natural Pool into a short hike. Hiking from Shete to Natural pool took 45min (and I am in no way in shape). We arrived just as the first tour left, allowing us full access to the pool with not another soul around for about and hour. Then, heading up the coast from the Natural Pool we hiked the 15 min to Daimari Beach, which was easily our favourite beach of the whole island. It is isolated, strikingly beautiful, unique in that the "shelf" that has been eroded in the middle divides the beach in two, and most importantly there was shade provided by the cliffs. This was vital, since by this time the sun was out in full force. Hiking became less than safe, so, we stayed, lounging at the beach, for hours waiting for the sun to go down a bit. This was wonderful. Shaded by the cliff, dipping in the slightly wavy ocean, in the beautiful location... Daimari is an Aruban paradise. Two tour companies took people here while we were there. They jumped off the cliffs and promptly left. For us, we drank 5L of water on this hike. As soon as 3:00 rolled around, we started to pack up and began our hike out (about 55min). Now, since we spent so long at Daimari we decided to do more Arikok the next day. We drove around to the south side of the island and the Vader entrance. We easily drove our small, compact rental car up the gravel road alongside the wind turbines (very impressive), and up to the Guadiriki caves. Spent some time there and continued up to the Fontein caves and Boca Prins. After returning, it was all basically just a couple hours; less than a half day. If we had planned our hike to be an hour or two quicker we likely could have done it all in a single day. Since we didn't drive all the way through the park's main road I can't speak to the drive-ability of it all. However, I do have some car tips! Tip five: Cars The rental companies, and the Arikok website, do a fair amount of fear mongering about the quality of the road that runs through the park (IMO). If I were to speculate, it would be because the nation's economy makes a fair amount of coin off of Jeep rentals, 4x4 tours and such. So, they would have you believe that travelling into Arikok with a compact car spells certain doom for your vehicle, and the rental agenies will warn you multiple times that if you have car damage or trouble that occurs within Arikok park, you are not covered at all, even if you purchased their limited liability coverage plan. So, I was pretty worried as well about road conditions but there was no need to be. Day two we drove our little compact rental through the road that runs from the California lighthouse, along past the dunes and down the North East coast, up to the chapel. It was slow going, to be sure, as we made sure to go at little more than the speed of a quick walk or slow jog. But at that speed all the bumps become easily managable and we didn't bottom out the car once. Similarly, driving the dirt road past the wind turbines in Arikok and up to Boca Prins was more than fine. It's like driving a country road in rural Alberta, in my opinion. Take it slow and you'll be golden. As long as I'm talking about cars, a few sub tips: they don't do as many lights in Aruba. Mostly round abouts. Might wanna brush up on round about etiquette before going if you're not familiar. The map that you get at the airport has common road signs on it! And while the road system on the ground looks complicated, with many un-named roads branching off of main routes, honestly, just worry about the main routes (of which there aren't many). Parking in ample pretty well everywhere, even downtown. It's cheap for pay parking where that's needed. No right turns on red lights. And finally, they do street lights on the same side of the intersection as where you stop, rather than opposite. So, you kinda have to lean forward to see the lights if you're in a low vehicle. Tip six: Eats I can't express enough how the most mentioned places were just tourist traps. Driftwood, Smokey Joe's, Wacky Wahoos: all very expensive. That isn't to say they're bad (we thought Wacky Wahoos was fabulous), but there not "where the locals/working class eat". The best (in terms of the matchup of quality and cost and authenticity) of these more expensive places that we went, we felt, was Red Fish. The catch of the day pan fried was delicious, and the local corn bread stuff they serve all over town was the tastiest at Red Fish as well. We never got to Zeerover's, sadly. I'm bummed about that. But the point is I can't comment on it. The best recommendation I have for those who want some real eats is to explore the 4A/B route. There are a lot of neighbourhood eats along that road that are fabulous. Fermin's BBQ was a highlight, where you could get a 2 person BBQ Platter with Yuca Frita (fucking YUM) for 34 Florins (whereas all those places mentioned about are usually 50 Florins or more per dish!). Buckets of six local beers for 25 Florins. It's great. The ambiance is fantastic, the locals chatty and open for conversation if you reach out. Just don't couple blocks south east from Fermin's is a small Columbian food diner kind of thing. Delicious arepas con queso. Had some chicharrón there that was as authentic as it gets. From there, I'd stress being brave and trying the food trucks. They mostly open after dark (I imagine because being inside one of those in the day would cook you), and there are dozens on every route. Since the water on the island is pristine (by the way, the water is pristine!) we didn't worry about getting sick, and we didn't. We tried some Dutch pancakes for what felt like was a dime, more Columbian food, some of the "snack" places (essentially you pick a filling and they put it in a hot dog bun), and some delicious burgers. I couldn't even tell you where these places were since we just drove by them and pulled over when we were hungry. But they're great! At these trucks we were paying 20-40 florins a meal for two people rather than 80-120 (or 140 at Wacky Wahoos. Ouch). Be brave and you'll be rewarded. Tip seven: Shopping Much the same thing applies to shopping. Now, I'm no shopper; that's my partners deal. But we did the High Rise mall area and found all the usual high-end brands: Pandora and a thousand other jewelers, Calvin K., whatever. And downtown at the "fashion capitol of the carribbean" we found Gucci and Mango and all the European brands. Whatever. The prices weren't any better than back home, so we were left asking "why?" Well, then we started going into other stores we found kicking around a little outside these zones. The most rewarding one (at least for her)? DShop. Good prices (slightly cheaper than home) and lots of variety with good quality and unique styles. Feel free to explore the local stores rather than just stampeding the big brands. Aruba's government has done a lot to encourage the local fashion industry, and it seems to be paying off. You can buy Prada back home. Random dump of tips! The rest of my tips don't have enough substance to equate to a whole section, so I'll just dump them here. Tip the bag boys/girls at the supermarkets. Chances are they don't have a wage and only make money based on tips. If you're gonna buy cherry tomatoes at Super Food, don't put them in a bag; they have designated plastic cups for those. Whatever produce you do get there, take it to a weigh station which will print a ticket with the price for you. Cereal is absurdly expensive at Superfood, as is milk and butter. The Cherry Limeade at Save Lots is delicious! We did not love Baby Beach by any strech of the imagination. In fact, most of the South East side of the island felt like it was all the rage once upon a time, and then it was overshadowed by the North West; many abandoned businesses and homes down there, but I wouldn't make a whole day of it. Interesting to see and worth just driving around. Bring water shoes. Especially if you're going to walk out to the shipwreck because there's some coral that stings out there. For Canadians, it cheaper to pay for stuff in Florins than USD. It is easy to get cash, especially if you bank with RBC or CIBC, as they have branches in Aruba! Buy lots of sunscreen. The aloe museum is very accessible and worth the trip. I preferred the beer Chill to the staple Balashi. Sunday and especially Monday, everything seems to be closed for most of the day. English is the lingua franca pretty well all over the toursit zones, as expected. But outside of that, while Enlgish is still very present, we found Spanish more useful. So, if you know Spanish then great! Oh, and Aruba is great! Enjoy.

Greetings, /Tucson! It's the JUNE 2016 edition of the Stuff to Do thread! Use this sticky to collect general stuff going on around town (including Tucson's surrounding areas) in June. You can still start new posts about an event, especially if you need help planning something. This will just serve as an easy reference. (PLEASE NOTE: You CANNOT start a new post if you are self-promoting, or if you are somehow related to the person(s) that stand to profit from said event. This is considered spam by reddit. Don't do it.) Comment with the details (date, time, location, admission fee, age restrictions, etc.) about any event/gathering/get-together that you think people may be interested in and I'll update the text of the main post so people can easily see what's going on. Examples of good stuff to tell us about include:
Art shows/exhibits
Museum events
Musical acts/shows
Gaming get-togethers
Charity events for actual charities (not kickstarter-like campaigns for your startup xyz store)
Your band's upcoming gig (playing at a venue that isn't your house)

[S2E1] Huge disappointment, and poor story-telling. let's explore scene-by-scene
Just putting this out here, I found this episode to be a big disappointment. I really liked the first season, and admittedly the bar was set high, but let's look at why this was objectively bad... Enter California (which wasn't really made apparent in the beginning), we have dozens and dozens of stakes in the ground which might be symbolic, or might be leading up to a murder scene, or maybe even a commercial development? Part of me thinks the editor was stoned and accidentally put this shot in. Whatever, other shows like BB have had great success with building a story through cold-openers. Cut to Colin telling his non-biological-looking kid to have a good day at school. This is a pretty standard looking 'drop my estranged kid off scene' to me. Then flash to him talking to a lawyer in what is PROBABLY the same room they used to film Matt Mcccoconeconeyeheye last season. Yawn. Normally we use a thing in storytelling and cinema called SHOW, DON'T TELL. I guess the editor or Nic Pizza missed that day of freshman year. "They raped your wife. Like. A lot. That kid. He's probably not yours. I guess you're going through a divorce. They won't let you see your kid. You have problems. Sucks that you're a cop." "...yeah. Here's money." END SCENE Flash to Vince Vaughn the.....business.....something? Titty bar owner? Mob boss? I don't know. Did this happen later today? Is the kid still at school? Either way, he's gonna help you find the guys who did this to your ex-wife. Maybe she'll even get cast in a speaking part this season. Then onto Vaughn looking business like, while his lady helps him put on cuff-links and re-assures us that he's a business man, who does business things. Yawn. He's obviously a casino owner who's up to shady shit, as this news paper article tells us, as told though through a lackey who's job is to TELL, AND NOT SHOW. mmk. Flash Forward to a bunch of books like Hagakure, a few weapons, an empty bottle of jameson, chinese food, and a badge. We get it. You're a cop. You also happen to be a lady-cop who treats the guy she's screwing the same way McNulty used to. oh wait. I get it. You're mcnulty. But you have a vagina. The good news is that she has to complain about something in the bedroom that she likes before going in to kick down doors and raid an online-porn website. Guess what though - seeing the laptop with a LIVE JASMINE banner or w/e was teh first clue that we were probably in 2010, and not some pulpish 1980something california nostalgia dream. GOod stuff. Fortunately lady-cop has to get mad at her sister who's here - because being a prostitute is a much lower calling than a cop with a drinking problem and a chuck-norris mentality. Onto Vaughn looking business again for like 3 minutes. Introduce a person. Cut scene. I think somebody spilled their beer on the editor's storyboard here, so maybe it's not his fault for this unecessary scene. Guy has been kidnapped? Good time to show off gratuitous images of women as objects in his house. I've never been to California, but if it's like anything I've seen in the movies, I kinda assumed that there was going to be a BRAZZERS poster somewhere. Cops deliver eviction notice, and then decide to track down some missing lady - cause that's how policing works - spend your morning kicking in a door, but then after lunch someone asks you to do something, and you drive around trying to find a missing person. End up showing off your weird daddy-issues with some dude who's preaching Hari Krishna nonsense about god, the dharma, and the end-times. Do we think this guy doesn't have blood on his hands? Because if he doesn't I'll drink a whole 6-pack of lonestar out of a boot. Enter Colin being a shit parent and not realizing his kid already went on a camping trip, and that he's a drunk. Don't worry son, I"ll go beat the shit out of aspen's dad. That missing guy is really throwing a wrench into Vaughn's work as a business man. I guess we need to build more rail-roads in california (which is a fucking hilarious proposition, the idea that the U.S. would ever invest in rail-transit in the 21st century is about as realistic as the U.S. investing in universal pre-kindergarden classes). I guess the newspaper made things bad, because casino owners are notoriously corrupt. On to bike-cop as he stops a hollywood starlet for a DWI. Apparently if you're a lindey lohan you need to break your house-arrest to score drugs. Good to know. On to Colin being spotted by a junkie while he beats the crap out of the journalist who wrote the article. You know what I would totally do if I wanted to look guilty and corrupt in the eye of the public? have the guy writing stories about me being an extortionist beaten to a bloody pulp. But then again, I'm not a brilliant writer. Unfortunately Colin's rage-boner isn't satisfied until you've beaten up at least 2 people in a day, so he decides to tell aspen's dad that he's a cop. and then beat up aspen's dad - this way when they give a statement to the police they can say 'he looked like swiggin' from deadwood . On to bike-cop getting some head from a lady. He's also got burns and a pill problem. Looks like the writers couldn't find a way to introduce this character at all, so they got his super horny girlfriend to tell us his name (i've forgotten it), and show that he has emotion problems. Blowjob scene. Cut. Finally two of our characters meet, while some lady sinugs a song that's supposed to be our 'mood lighting', - they did this so that you'll know this isn't a feel good story. We also learn that vince and colin are in on this together, and that he's a dirty cop. Flash to bike-cop speeding at night because he's got problems, and then finding casper the dead guy. Everyone gets a call, and the team assembles around the dead guy who is important. Insert some obvious cop-rivarly-standoffishness that we totally have NEVER seen from a cop drama before, and then a shot of the pacific ocean at sunrise. END What we have here is the making of a cookie-cutter cop drama, that hasn't managed to break the mold, or even address the issue of last season's problems. You have men with problems, and women who suck their cock. The only unique thing in this season is that you have a woman acting like the stereotypical male cop with a drinking problem. Maybe Nick Pizza is up to something that's slow building, but so far we've really just got 4 of the same characters. 1: Crooked cop with a drinking problem. Pissed at his ex-wife. 2: rage-a-holic lady cop with a drinking problem. pissed at sistefather. 3: self-loathing burned cop with a pill problem. Blames self/shuns girlfriend. 4: Self doubting business man who can't get his wife pregnant and create a legacy. Blames that guy named casper. Now, maybe the entire state of california is full of violent and manipulative white people with guns and apparently no day-to-day work to speak of (I've never been there, I don't know), or maybe Nic pizza can only manage to write characters who are men that need therapy sessions. The only good news is that this season looks to be so horrible that it will make the most recent season of Game of Thrones look better by comparison. I think we have 7 episodes of this season left - lets hope they can give us a plot to speak of within the next episode before I fall asleep or resort to watching re-runs of THE WIRE. Predictions, hate-mail, or shitty-writing-apologists are all welcome.
